Mazzei Ser Lapo Chianti Classico
Powerful. Robust. Rich.
You can’t talk about the history of winemaking in Tuscany without talking about the Mazzei family. On top of their ancestor coining the term ‘Chianti’, the family’s descendent Filipo Mazzei (1730-1816) was invited by Thomas Jefferson to plant a vineyard on his estate and while in the U.S. is said to have played a part in inspiring his famous friend’s well known view that ‘All men are created equal’.
Exactly what a great Chianti Classico needs to be! Fresh with powerful berry aromas, strong structure and striking, earthy and intense flavors of ripe fruit like currants.

Mazzei
Nowadays, the Mazzei family may not be helping out with the Declaration of Independence, but they are still just as essential a part of the Italian wine world. Even with such an illustrious history, the Mazzei family are doing their ancestors proud.
The Winery & Region
Castello di Fonterutoli
Fonterutoli, is an old bastion of Florence only a few kilometers from Castellina in Chianti. It has an extraordinary view of Siena, which is so close that it’s possible to discern the Torre del Mangia and the outline of the Duomo.
The centuries-old ownership of Marchesi Mazzei has preserved the handful of houses, the church of San Miniato, and the villa erected at the end of the 1500’s in place of the citadel, more or less unchanged. Time stopped here, maintaining the charm of the Middle Ages.
The excellence of the wines of Castello di Fonterutoli is renowned worldwide and represents one of the points of reference for the whole Chianti Classico. They also produce Castello di Fonterutoli Extra Virgin Olive Oil.
