Is a good wine and chocolate pairing possible? Anything is possible! It’s just that some things are harder than others…

Chocolate Easter Eggs on wooden background

In honor of Easter (a time when you’re actually obliged to eat as much chocolate over a three day period as you possibly can) we thought we’d make it easier and give some pointers on how to match your sweet treats with the right bottles.

Just remember that if you get the pairing wrong, a good piece of chocolate can wipe out a wine’s flavor (as they both aim at similar places on the palate). So as a general rule, try to go for more full-bodied wines, or bottles with a pretty intense sweetness.

Fruity red wines

Red wines are the obvious to place to start; you’ll need to go fruity and jammy. Wines like this can pair really nicely with chocolate-centric desserts that use fruit themselves, like cakes, or even chocolate dipped strawberries.

What we’ve got:

  • 2014 Famille Perrin La Vieille Ferme Rouge
  • 2012 Domaine Faiveley Pinot Noir
  • 2012 Pavillon de Taillefer Saint-Émilion Grand Cru
Cheese, Chocolates, Wine
BottlesXO does not condone pairing chocolate & cheese

White wines

This is a little trickier, but not too hard if you know what you’re going for; white wines with some sweetness or with plenty of body and depth can match milk chocolate, and even the white stuff too (depending on whether you choose to call it chocolate or not…).

What we’ve got:

  • 2012 Heinz Schmitt Erben Riesling
  • 2014 Frank & Serafico Di Macchia Vermentino

And no, just because they fit in terms of indulgence… though that’s part of it, obviously. Bubbly wines are often a natural with desserts, particularly their sweeter and bolder incarnations; fizzy wines like this can stand up to good chocolates bold flavors too.

What we’ve got:

  • 2012 Franz Keller Pinot Sect
  • de Venoge Réserve Rosé Champagne
