Do you ever catch yourself day dreaming about a European getaway ? Well we’ve got something to help you with that; the incredible story of the Mazzei Winery in Italy. Read to the end of the article to find out how YOU can win a trip there!

Fonterutoli Castle sits on the hills facing beautiful views of Val d’Elsa in Tuscany, Italy, a small 16th century town and commune in the province of Siena, and like most the buildings in that small town has stood there for at least 600 years. But it’s way more than just a pretty location.

The Mazzei family have owned these estates since 1435; the winery here is inseparable from the history of Italian winemaking, one of the oldest and most prestigious wine producers in the land. Founder Lipo Mazzei is even considered the “father” of the name of the name Chianti, being the first person known to use the term to describe what is now one of Italy’s best known wine varieties.

Where the original castle once stood now is a majestic villa and a tranquil country village surrounded by 650 hectares of woodland, olive groves and vineyards that have had a huge impact on the world of Italian wine.

There’s an even more interesting story to be told about the people who run it. Filipo Mazzei for example, a descendant of the winery’s founder, lived from 1730 until 1816 and was invited to the U.S. by Thomas Jefferson to plant a vineyard on his estate. As in, “I helped invent America” Thomas Jefferson. Apparently Filipo might have inspired his famous friend’s famous view that “All men are created equal”.

Nowadays they may not be helping out with the Declaration of Independence, but they are still a huge deal in the world of Italian wine.
