People love talking about wine almost as much as they love drinking it. Thing is, of all those wine words seem complicated; but they don’t have to be.
To get you started, here’s an introduction to seven wine terms we find ourselves using a lot. Test them out at your next dinner party and thank us later.
A complex wine is one that gives different sensations in one mouthful; it unfolds gradually, rather than tasting the same all the way up until its gone. This is one of the first words you can use upon tasting a wine. Then, you’ve got to elaborate.
A wine’s structure refers to how its various elements fit together. If a wine is well structured, it means that its body, its acidity, its aromas… everything fit together in a well balanced way. Particularly well-structured wine is likelier to age well, by the way.
You could be forgiven for thinking that elegant just means “refined” or even “good”, but its more specific than that. It usually describes a wine that is light in body, sharp in its fruity flavors, and acidic.
This refers to a wine with a sharp profile, which can be off-putting, but its not always necessarily bad; it can also describe the intense sensation given by a wine in which acidity overwhelms the smoother, fruitier flavors.
Wines with that are “minerally” or possess “minerality” have a unique flavor that is described in various ways with reference to zesty lemon, sea salt or even gravel. Basically it’s that fresh group of flavors that don’t remind you of fruit, spices or herb; it’s often applied to rosé.
Creamy is a term used to describe the rich, smooth feel in the mouth of white and sparkling wines aged in oak barrels. It’s a good thing; we used this word to describe our biodynamic Spanish Cava.
No, it doesn’t mean a wine tastes like dirt; but it does mean that a wine has certain savory flavors in its profile reminiscent ofthings like grass or forest floor.
